Dupl (MHi); subjoined to Dupl of Cathalan to TJ, 10 Aug. 1819; in an unidentified hand, signed by Cathalan; endorsed by TJ as a letter from “Cathalan Veuve” received 6 Nov. 1819. RC (MHi); varies slightly from Dupl, with the most significant differences noted below; in same unidentified hand, signed by Cathalan; between dateline and salutation: “Monsieur Jefferson Esqr a Philadelphie”; endorsed by TJ as as a letter from “Cathalan Veuve Samatan” received 3 Dec. 1819 and so recorded in SJL. Translation by Dr. Roland H. Simon.
1. Instead of preceding four words, RC reads “qui vous annoncoit la mort de m Et. Cathalan” (“informing you of the death of Mr. Stephen Cathalan”).
2. RC: “le triplicata d’une lettre” (“the triplicate of a letter”).
3. Sentence in RC reads “nous recevrons avec plaisir la lettre de votre part, que mr Vaughan nous annonce” (“we will receive with pleasure the letter from you that Mr. Vaughan informs us is coming”).
4. Preceding three words not in RC.
5. RC here adds “feu” (“the late”).
