Morris began building a new mansion at Morrisiana after he returned from Europe in 1798. Perhaps the subject of PARQUET floors came up when Morris attended a dinner at the President’s House on 6 Apr. (Anne Cary Morris, ed., The Diary and Letters of Gouverneur Morris, 2 vols. [London, 1889], 2:424; ).
