From John Jay to Richard Peters, 23 April 1811
To Richard Peters
Bedford 23d April 1811
Dear Sir
I recd. by the last mail your Letter of the 14 Inst:—1 Between the Date of mine to You of the 29 ult,2 and the arrival of yours of the 11 Inst,3 I was taken with a sore throat— it prevailed in the Neighbourhood, as was thought to be epidemic— As the Inflamation abated, a severe cough came on. I am getting better slowly, but am very feeble; tho’ less so than I was in April last.
As to the Question—to what does the Remark that “some amendments were made during the Interview, but none of much Importance”4 refer? I answer, it refers to the Paper which was the Subject of our Consideration during that Interview: for as the Business took the Course mentioned in my Letter, a Recurrence to the Draft itself was unnecessary, and it was not read.
Your Statement appears to me to be too strong— between the Facts specified in my Letter, and the Inferences which may be drawn from them, there is a Distinction, which I apprehend is not preserved sufficiently clear and obvious in your Statement. I endeavoured to write those facts with great Precision— if you should observe any Defect of Perspicuity respecting them, be so good as to apprize me of it. In affairs of this kind there cannot be too much Circumspection.
I feel strongly tempted to write you a long Letter, but the Fever which still hangs about me, admonishes me to forbear and have patience ’till I gain a little Strength— I am Dr Sir your’s very sincerely—
John Jay
