James Madison Papers

From James Madison to John Drayton, [March 1814]

To John Drayton

[March 1814]

Sir

I received duly your favor of the 25. Jany. with the Copy of your “View of S. Carolina” put into the hands of Judge Johnson.1 I regret that it has been so little in my power as yet, to make myself acquainted with the Contents of the work. From a glance, at its scope and character, and at its stile of execution, I am enabled to infer, that it is a valuable contribution to the general stock of information, which is to do justice to our country, under several important aspects; and I pray you to accept my thanks for your politeness in sending me a copy of it; with assurances of my friendly respects

James Madison

RC (NRU: Thurlow Weed Papers). Undated, but Drayton wrote at the top of the page: “NB. Judge Johnson arrived in Charleston this 28th. March 1814 from Washington; & immediately sent me this letter from the President.”

1Drayton had previously sent a copy of this book to JM via Paul Hamilton, which JM acknowledged (Drayton to JM, 12 Apr. 1809, and JM to Drayton, ca. 1 May 1809, PJM-PS, description begins Robert A. Rutland et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Presidential Series (7 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 1984–). description ends 1:110, 156).
