1. The letters from Edward Weyman, Jr., John Mayrant, and Joseph Bee to Butler, which do not appear to have been enclosed in Butler’s letter to GW, have not been identified. In a previous letter to GW (not found), Butler had recommended James Simons for this post (Butler to Wade Hampton, 28 Jan. 1793, ScU). On the appointment of a new surveyor and inspector for the port of Charleston, S.C., following the death of Edward Weyman, Sr., see Edward Weyman, Jr., to GW, 10 Jan., Thomas Bee to GW, 14 Jan. 1793. GW submitted the nomination of Weyman Jr. to the U.S. Senate on 18 February. The Senate confirmed Weyman’s appointment on 19 Feb. 1793 ( 1:129).
2. John Mayrant (1762–1836), who served for a time as an aide to Capt. John Paul Jones during the Revolutionary War, was wounded during the famous engagement between the Bon Homme Richard and HMS Serapis in September 1779. Mayrant later was promoted to the rank of naval lieutenant and then captain. He served in the South Carolina general assembly 1788–90 and the state constitutional convention in 1790.
