Dr Sir,
As I intend to leave this City Tomorrow I take the Liberty of sending you the inclosed. I have just recd a Letter from H.B. Livingston & his Brother John.1 Harry informs me that his Major has quitted the Service & that his Coll. has also resigned. These Places being vacant I think Harry shd be made a Lieut. Coll immediately, for as the Lieut. Coll. continues in the Service he certainly [ought] to have the Regt. John it seems had heard that the Congress were abt employing a Person to purchase Goods at Montreal & is desirous of that Appointmt.2 By attending to these Matters you will have the Satisfaction of obliging a worthy Family as well as your F[rien]d & hble Servt

This letter is written on the verso of the address page of Henry Beekman Livingston to JJ, 2 Jan. 1776 (EJ: 9641), with this explanatory note by JJ: “On recg this Letter [from Livingston], being abt leavg the Town I wrote the following Letter to Jams Duane Esqr. inclosing some public Papers.” Enclosures not identified.
1. The letter from John R. Livingston has not been located.
2. There is no record of John R. Livingston’s receiving such an appointment from Congress in 1776.
