I have the honour of forwarding to you a Map of the western part of the State of New York, shewing the route of a proposed Canal from Lake Erie to Hudson’s River—together, with the report of the Commissioners appointed to explore the route of an inland navigation from Hudson’s River to Lake Ontario, and Lake Erie—which may not be altogether uninteresting.1 With great consideration Your Most Ob: Serv:

2. John Bullus, a partner in the New York firm of Bullus, Decatur, and Rucker, had been a naval surgeon during the Quasi-War and since 1807 had served as naval agent in the port of New York (William S. Dudley, ed., The Naval War of 1812: A Documentary History [2 vols. to date; Washington, 1985—], 1:547).
