1. Before May 1757 when there were sixteen companies (seventeen counting Christopher Gist’s company of scouts) in the Virginia Regiment, each company usually had three sergeants, but after the number of companies was reduced to eight (plus the two that were sent to South Carolina) each was supposed to have four instead of three sergeants (see GW to John Stanwix, 30 July 1757). Each also had two lieutenants instead of one. The various size and necessary rolls of the companies, July–October 1757 (see GW’s Instructions to Company Captains, 29 July 1757, n.2), indicate that the following men were sergeants in the eight companies in the colony: (1) GW’s company: John Sallard, Reuben Vass, James Littlepage, and Charles Stringham; (2) Peter Hog’s (later Andrew Lewis’s) company: John David Wilper (Woelpper), John McCulley, Josias Baker, and David Dehay; (3) Thomas Waggener’s company: Francis Austin, Samuel Poe, John Creagh (Creech), and Bibby Broocke; (4) Robert Stewart’s company: Charles Cailliaux, Thomas Jones, Francis Moreland, and William Broughton; (5) Joshua Lewis’s company: Andrew Vaughan, John Gender, James Hill, and Henry Williams; (6) Henry Woodward’s company: John Nash, Richard Trotter, Joseph Fent (Feint), and William Dean; (7) Robert Spotswood’s (later John McNeill’s) company: Samuel Robinson, Richard Good, Joseph Bledsoe, and James Carson; and (8) Robert McKenzie’s company: James Robinson, Thomas Watts, Charles Scott, and Thomas White.
