GW landed at two o’clock in Charleston at Prioleau’s wharf to an artillery salute, pealing bells, and “reiterated shouts of joy” from “an uncommonly large concourse of citizens” (Gazette of the United States [Philadelphia], 21 May 1791).
1. According to GW the dinner at the governor’s residence on Meeting Street was attended by “the principal gentlemen of the civil, clerical, and military professions” (, 6:131).
2. GW recorded in his diary that on 6 May he “Dined at Majr. [Pierce] Butlers, and went to a Ball in the evening at the Governors where there was a select company of ladies” (ibid.).
