To James Madison from David Parish, 24 January 1816
From David Parish
Philadelphia the 24 Jany 1816.
Sir,
The warm interest you have never ceased to take in the affairs of our worthy friend Lafayette, induces me to transmit to you an Extract from a Letter I lately received from him,1 & to take the liberty of enquiring whether the location of the Land you wished to Secure to him near New-orleans, & about which there was some difficulty, when last I had the honor of conversing with You on the Subject, has been since then effected.2
I propose writing to the General shortly & should be happy to be enabled to give him some satisfactory information in relation to this business. I am with high Regard Sir Your faithful & obed Serv

1. In the enclosed extract (1 p.) Lafayette stated that his land near Pointe Coupee had been sold; that if “the Tract near the Town” was allotted to him, Sir John Coghill would become owner of a part of it, or “the totality of the 520 acres if located elsewhere”; and that Lafayette would, therefore, greatly prefer to obtain the land near New Orleans. He had been able to pay his debts, however, and now had an income “sufficient to a modest maintainance,” for which he expressed gratitude to Congress and his friends, including Parish.
