Kaskashia July 18th. 1816
A vacancy in the appointment of commissary general of pu⟨rcha⟩ses and supplies having taken place by the death of Colo Jonas Simonds at St. Louis1—The undersigned take the liberty respectfully to recommend to the President of the United States for that appointment Mr. Thomas Hempstead of St. Louis as a suitable person to discharge the duties of that office, and to fill the vacancy

1. Lt. Col. Jonas Simonds died on 13 July 1816 (Daily National Intelligencer, 6 Aug. 1816).
2. Benjamin Stephenson was the delegate from Illinois Territory in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses.
3. This was probably William Morrison (1763–1837), a prominent fur trader and merchant in Kaskaskia (Foley, History of Missouri, 1673 to 1820, 1:134).
