Dear Sir

The uncertainty when my note to Peyton for 558.14 D may be deposited with you, obliging me to be in a state of preparation for it, I find it better to provide & forward you the money at once, that no delay may be asked. you will accordingly recieve herein inclosed five hundred & sixty dollars to enable you to discharge the note on sight. accept my affectionate saluations.

TJ recorded the transaction in his financial memoranda “to pay my note to Craven Peyton 558.14 ante Aug. 11” (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. On 30 Dec., George Jefferson responded “merely to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of the 27th. inclosing 560$. which is entered to your credit” (RC in MHi; at foot of text: “Thos. Jefferson esqr.”; endorsed by TJ as received 4 Jan. 1804 and so recorded in SJL).
