Th: Jefferson will thank mr Barnes for thirty dollars for mr Wanscher and thirty three and one third to be sent to Monticello.

In his financial memoranda under 15 Dec., TJ recorded the receipt of $70 from barnes and payments of $30 to Marten wanscher and $35 to Gabriel Lilly, from which Lilly was to pay $33.33 “to Polly Carr for the hire of her negro, making with that ante Nov. 1. is for the whole year” (, 2:1088; TJ to William Bache, 11 Oct., 22 Nov. 1802). A letter from TJ to Lilly dated 15 Dec. 1802 is recorded in SJL with the notation “35. D. P. Carr,” but has not been found.
