1. This letter is in French. There is no addressee on the MS. In unidentified handwriting on the last page the following is written, “Col Hamilton Col John Larens.” The contents of the letter indicate that it was written to someone at Headquarters who was to relay the information to Washington. Aside from the above notation there is no evidence that the letter was written to H.
Henry Leonard Philip, Baron d’Arendt, had been made colonel of the German Battalion in March, 1777. He was placed in command of the troops at Fort Mifflin on October 18, 1777.
