General Orders

Head-Quarters Morristown saturday March 11th 1780.

Parole Trade— C. Signs Leinster. Bedford.

Hand’s and Maxwell’s brigades will relieve the fatigue party at the Baskin-Ridge Hospital tomorrow.

Stark’s brigade will furnish a serjeant two Corporals and twenty men as a fatigue party to be sent tomorrow to Mr William Beard’s saw mill, near Basken-Ridge to assist in repairing the same, for the use of the Army.1

The Main Guard and Morristown Picket are to be relieved by detail every other day ’till further orders.

The brigadiers and officers commanding brigades are desired to attend at Head Quarters punctually at 11 ôclock next monday morning.2

Adj. Gen. Alexander Scammell’s orderly book entry for this date includes additional general orders: “Clintons Brigade will relieve the Qr master Genls store Guard at the White House. … The first Maryland Brigade will relieve the Forage Guard at Veal Town tomorrow.

“The second Pennsylvania Brigade will relieve the Fatigue Party at Pluckemin Hospital Tomorrow” (orderly book, 17 Oct. 1779–22 March 1780, DNA: RG 93, Orderly Books, 1775–1783, vol. 33).

1Brig. Gen. John Stark’s brigade was camped at Jockey Hollow adjacent to the road leading directly toward Basking Ridge, N.J., about six miles to the south. At least four sawmills still operated in that vicinity a century later (see Snell, Hunterdon and Somerset description begins James P. Snell, comp. History of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties, New Jersey, with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of its Prominent Men and Pioneers. Philadelphia, 1881. description ends , 749).
