M. P. Gibson having further remitted us on your account $255.6. to meet the $256.79.—mention’d & in respect of the 20t ulto whereby the first of your Bonds to Mess. N. & J. & R Van Staphorst for $1000. with Interest, becomes cancelled we have the honor of Sending you Said bond, here enclosed, with our receipt thereon and acknowledging your favr of 25: ulto we Salute1 with great respect

Enclosure: bond of TJ to van Staphorst & Hubbard, 26 Mar. 1797, for a $1,000 installment on a $2,000 loan, to be paid before 1 Oct. 1800, with 6 percent interest due at that time (MS in DLC: TJ Papers, 101:17333–4, in TJ’s hand and signed by him, with signature mutilated to cancel bond, witnessed by David Watson, with attestation in TJ’s hand signed by justice of the peace Thomas Bell and certified by signature of Albemarle County clerk John Nicholas on 3 Apr. 1797, endorsed at foot of text in same hand as covering letter [trimmed]: “Received Payment of the within Bond pr One thous[and] Dollars with Interest Newyork June 7h 1817 LeRoy Bayard & Co pr N & J & R Van Staphorst of Amst[erdam],” docketed in an unidentified hand: “Thos Jefferson. Oble groot $1,000—vervalt 1 October 1800. a 6 p.c.—van 1 October 1796 af” [“Thos Jefferson. bond for $1,000 due 1 October 1800 at 6 percent from 1 October 1796 onwards”], with additional calculations by TJ:
