Thomas Barclay to the American Commissioners, July 1786
Thomas Barclay to the American Commissioners
Mogadore July 1786
Gentlemen
I wrote you from Morocco under date of the 16th. As I do not know when that Letter is likely to reach you, I trouble you now with a Copy of it, and as I shall set out in a few days for Tangiers, I defer until my arrival in Europe being particular. I am Gentlemen, Your most obedt. humble servt.,
Thos Barclay
RC (DLC); in Franks’ hand, signed and addressed to TJ at Paris in Barclay’s hand. Tr (DNA: PCC, No. 87, i); in Short’s hand; enclosed, along with Barclay’s enclosure in the present letter, in TJ to Jay, 26 Sep. 1786. Tr (DNA: PCC, No. 107). Noted in SJL as received 3 Sep. 1786. Enclosure: Dupl of Barclay to Commissioners, 16 July 1786.
This letter was probably written about 25 July 1786. In his letter of 16 July Barclay told the Commissioners that he expected to “set out tomorrow or the day following” from the capital of Morocco; and in a letter to John Adams of 31 July, dated at Mogadore, he said: “Tomorrow, I am to sett out on my way to Tangers” (MHi: AMT, enclosing copy of Barclay’s letter to Jay of 30 July 1786 which informed him of the conclusion of the treaty and of his intention to send it “by express from the first Port I can reach in Europe to Mr. Jefferson and from him and Mr. Adams you will have the particulars”; Tr of both in DLC: TJ Papers, 23: 3922–3).
