ALS, DLC:GW. Below Scott’s signature, GW wrote out a receipt, which was signed by Capt. William Croghan: “Septr 6th 1778. Then received Twenty five Guineas of Geo. Washington to be delivered to Brigr Genl Scott.” According to GW’s expense account, the money was sent to Scott “to enable him to engage some of the Inhabitants betwn him and the Enemy to watch their Movements & apprize him of them to pre[ve]nt surprizes” (DLC:GW, ser. 5, vol. 22). On 25 Sept., Scott was given an additional 25 guineas “for the like purposes,” and he was sent another 25 guineas on 22 Oct. (GW’s Revolutionary War expense account, DLC:GW, ser. 5, vol. 22).
