Sir,
A demand is presented to me for 1868 49/100 dollars for transcripts of proceedings on American Vessels in the Vice Admiralty Court of Dominica, & other expences connected therewith; and some other smaller demands are depending. I have on hand but 1612 26/100 dollars. I therefore request the Presidents order on the Treasury Department for One Thousand Dollars, to enable me to discharge the above demands and others of like nature as they shall occur:1 and am very respectfully sir your most obt servant

1. GW wrote Secretary of the Treasury Oliver Wolcott, Jr., on this date: “Pay to Timothy Pickering secretary of state one thousand Dollars out of the proper fund, for the purposes expressed in his Letter of this date hereto annexed” (LB, DLC:GW). Warrant 6108 for that purpose was issued on 23 May (see the report of expenditures enclosed with GW to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, 15 Feb. 1797, in DNA: RG 46, entry 47).
