To Thomas Jefferson from John Thomson Mason, 12 October 1801
From John Thomson Mason
George Town 12th Octo 1801
Dear Sir
Inclosed I send you an estimate, from one of the Commissioners of the tax, of the taxes paid by that part of the District, which was formerly in the County of Prince Georges, to the State of Maryland.
I have not yet received the estimate for that part of the District which was in Montgomery County. It is prepared and I shall probably get it this week at Annapolis
Your Obedt Servt
J. T. Mason
RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 8:0232); frayed; endorsed by TJ as received 12 Oct. and so recorded in SJL; also endorsed by TJ: “[…] taxes.” Enclosure: Samuel Hepburn to Mason, Upper Marlboro, 18 Aug., answering Mason’s request for information on the county taxes for the last year, and enclosing a statement (not found) with “the amount of property now within the District of Columbia, but formerly assessed in this County,” and separating the “property within the City from that without, because that within the City paid no part of the tax for building our Court House” (RC in DNA: RG 59, MCL; endorsed by TJ: “Hipburn to J. T. Mason”).
County of Prince Georges: Washington County, District of Columbia, included land from Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland. Hepburn wrote from Upper Marlboro, in Prince George’s County (see enclosure above). For the taxes formerly imposed by Virginia on Alexandria County, the other part of the District of Columbia, see Francis Peyton to TJ, 30 July.
