§ From Adams & Rhoades. 6 November 1806, Chronicle Office, Boston. “We have herewith inclosed our Bill for publishing the Laws of the UStates &c1 made at the first Session of the Ninth Congress—you will as usual please to fill up the Blank by a sum agreable to Contract—& Genl: Varnum will be so obliging as to receipt for the amount in behalf of Your obedient Servants.”2

1The enclosed statement (1 p.) listed a 7 November 1805 charge of $7 for publishing “the names of American Seamen impressed & detained in the British Service” and 12 May 1806 charges of $1 for “publishing information of the Death of Joshua Orne—Marblehead” and $81.50 for publishing the laws, for a total charge of $89.50. At the foot of the page is a 12 December 1806 note in a clerk’s hand, signed by Jacob Wagner, certifying the statement’s accuracy.

2Zachariah Poulson submitted a similar statement to the Department of State (1 p.), including a 30 October 1805 charge of $10 for thrice publishing lists of seamen impressed “for want of documents to prove their Citizenship” and 1 July 1806 charges of $13.50 for “the American Daily Advertiser from Jan. 1. 1805 to July 1. 1806” and $81.50 for “publishing the Acts passed at the First Session of the Ninth Congress,” for a total charge of $105. This account bears a 6 November 1806 note in a clerk’s hand, signed by Wagner, certifying its accuracy (DNA: RG 217, First Auditor’s Accounts, No. 18,768).
