From Alexander Hamilton to Elias Boudinot, [5 July 1778]

[New Brunswick, New Jersey, July 5, 1778. The description in the dealer’s catalogue reads: “… introducing the Marquis de Vienne,2 whom Hamilton had met through Lafayette. ‘Though a young man, he has been a long time in service.… I am not well acquainted with his pretensions in our service, but as I dare say they will be reasonable, I shall request you will give him your interest.’” Letter not found.]

Boudinot, a New Jersey lawyer, was appointed commissary general of prisoners by the Continental Congress on June 6, 1777, with the pay and rations of a colonel. In November, 1777, he was elected a delegate to Congress.

2. Louis-Pierre, marquis de Vienne, was a major in the French army. Congress commissioned him a brevet lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army on July 15, 1778.
