Alexander Hamilton Papers

To Alexander Hamilton from Benjamin Lincoln, 21 [March] 1792

From Benjamin Lincoln

Boston [March]1 21 1792

Sir

I shall pay particular attention to your directions2 respecting the payment of the drafts of the treasurer in favour of the Loan officer of New Hampshire & Mr Appleton of this State. You will learn by the inclosed return that a large proportion of the money on hand is in the bills of the bank of the united States issued in Philadelphia which are now sold here at a discount of one ⅌ Cent. From what I hear of the price of stock with you, which is much under what they are sold for in this Town I think the bank bills issued in Philadelphia will soon he up at par at the least.

1Lincoln mistakenly wrote “May.” The copy in the Massachusetts Historical Society and one of the two copies in RG 56, Letters from the Collector at Boston, National Archives, are dated May 21, 1792. In the Lincoln letter book in the Massachusetts Historical Society, however, this letter appears after a letter of March 21, 1792, addressed to Nathaniel Appleton, commissioner of loans for Massachusetts, on the same topic as that discussed in Lincoln’s letter to H printed above. The next letter in the letter book is dated March 31, 1792.
