General Orders

Head-Quarters, White Marsh [Pa.] Nov: 6th 1777.

Parole Warsaw.C. Signs Berlin. Dresden.

The independent Company commanded by Capt. Joshua Williams is to be annexed to, and do duty with the 4th Pennsylvania regiment, ’till further orders.1

All prisoners (not being Continental soldiers) and suspected persons are to be carried to the Major General of the day, to be examined and dealt with, as he shall see fit.

The Colonels or officers commanding regiments are to appoint one officer from each regiment, to go with four men to Bethlehem, to get such of their cloathing as is absolutely necessary, & bring the same in waggons to camp. The waggon Master General will make the necessary provision of waggons for that end.2

1. Joshua Williams (1744–1825), who served as adjutant to a battalion of Pennsylvania Associators in May 1775 and as captain of the 1st Pennsylvania Battalion of the flying camp between June and December 1776, had been appointed captain of an independent Pennsylvania company in March 1777. Williams retired from the Continental service on 1 July 1778.

2. Weedon’s orderly book reads “Waggons for that purpose” and adds the following sentence: “Genl. Scott Brigadier of the day in the room of Genl. Smallwood on other Duty” (Weedon’s Orderly Book description begins Valley Forge Orderly Book of General George Weedon of the Continental Army under Command of Genl George Washington, in the Campaign of 1777–8: Describing the Events of the Battles of Brandywine, Warren Tavern, Germantown, and Whitemarsh, and of the Camps at Neshaminy, Wilmington, Pennypacker’s Mills, Skippack, Whitemarsh, & Valley Forge.
