From George Washington to Thomas Jefferson, 12 February 1793

To Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia] Feby 12th 1793

Dear Sir,

Taking it for granted that the several matters enumerated in the Report,1 herewith returned, are supported by authenticated facts—thoroughly investigated2—the statement of them, and the observations thereupon, accord with the sentiments of Dear Sir Yours &ca

Go: Washington

ALS, DLC: Jefferson Papers. Jefferson docketed this letter as received on 12 Feb. 1793.

1Jefferson placed a mark directly in front of this word and noted in the left-hand margin of the manuscript page: “Report on the commerce of the US.”

2On 10 Feb., Jefferson sent GW “the rough draught of the Report he has prepared on commerce” for GW’s “judgment” (DLC:GW). For a history of this report and its revisions, see the editorial note to “Report on Commerce” in Jefferson Papers, description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends 27:532–35. For the draft presented to GW, see “Second Stage of the Report on Commerce [before 5 Feb.-after 23 Feb. 1793],” and notes, ibid., 553–67. GW wrote only one penciled notation on the draft (ibid., 566, n.24). The report was submitted in its final form to Congress on 16 Dec. 1793 (ibid., 567–81).
