Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson, 6 March 1793

Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia] Wednesday 6[t]h March 1793

The President requests that the Secretary of State will consider the enclosed letter, written on behalf of the French settlers at Gallipolis, and return an answer to the writer as favourable as circumstances can warrant.1

The President wishes Gov. Paterson’s commission to be made out & sent to him by the Post of this day that he may be making his arrangements to go the Circuit allotted him. The President intends to ride out about 10 oclock, if he can conveniently—and therfore would wish to sign the Commission before he goes.2

AL, DLC: Jefferson Papers. Jefferson docketed this letter as “Lear Tobias, recd Mar. 6. 93.”

1For the enclosed letter, see John Rome to GW, 6 March. No answer from Jefferson to Rome has been identified.

2For William Paterson’s appointment as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, see GW to U.S. Senate, 4 Mar., and note 1. GW signed Paterson’s commission later this day (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends 82). Paterson quickly received an assignment to attend the southern circuit, which had court sessions scheduled at Savannah, Ga., on 25 April, Columbia, S.C., on 12 May, and New Bern, N.C., on 1 June, and on 1 April he left his home in New Jersey for New York City, from which he set sail for Georgia two days later (Marcus and Perry, Documentary History of the Supreme Court, description begins Maeva Marcus et al., eds. The Documentary History of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1789–1800. 8 vols. New York, 1985-2007. description ends 2:345–47, 358).
