From George Washington to Jaques Campion, 24 February 1787

To Jaques Campion

Mount Vernon February 24th 1787

Sir,

Your letter of the 26th of Jany came duly to hand.1 I am much obliged to you for your good wishes, and interest which you take in my welfare—The Asses are in very good order, but I am sorry to inform you that the Gold cock and the Silver hen pheasant are ded; the others appear to be drooping, and I am afraid that all the care and attention which is paid to them will not be able to preserve them.2 I am Sir yr Humble Servant

2. GW wrote in his diary for 29 Nov. 1786: “Mr. [Jaques] Campion (who brought the Asses and Pheasants here from the Marqs. de la fayette) [left] for Alexa. to proceed in the Stage for Baltimore. Gave him 30 Louis dores for his trouble” (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols.
