I have this moment receved Intelliegence from Captn Ward1 (at Hackingsack) by Express that the Enemies Shipping are Comning up the North River, they were he Says at Fort Lee or oposite this afternoon I thought it my Duty to Give Your Excellency the Earleyest Intelligence of a matter of So much Consequence.2 I am Your Excellencies most Obedient & very Humble Servt

1On 3 April the New Jersey Privy Council ordered Capt. Peter Ward from the Bergen County militia light horse to “Command the whole Guard”—consisting of militia from Sussex, Somerset, and Bergen counties—to “Rendezvous at or near Hackensack” for the protection of Bergen County (Bernstein, N.J. Privy Council Minutes description begins David A. Bernstein, ed. Minutes of the Governor’s Privy Council, 1777–1789. Trenton, 1974. In New Jersey Archives, 3d ser., vol. 1. description ends , 150).

Peter Ward (1755–1812) served as captain in a battalion of New Jersey state troops during 1781 and 1782. After the war, he represented Bergen County in the state legislature and legislative council for several years.
