General Orders, 1 January 1780

General Orders

Head-Quarter’s Morristown saturday Jany 1st 1780

Parole Dauphin— C. Signs Picardy Provence—

Captain Brice of the 3rd Maryland regiment is appointed Brigade Major and Brigade Inspector of the 1st Maryland Brigade ’till further orders—He is to be respected & obey’d accordingly.

Exact brigade returns of the number of shoes wanting to be made tomorrow at orderly time; The Sub-Cloathiers or their Assistants are at the same time to make returns of the shoes in their hands for the Cloathier General that he may be enabled thereby to make his distribution upon equitable terms.1

As it is apprehended the stock of shoes now on hand will not be adequate to the demands of the whole Army the Brigadiers and Commandants are requested to see that the returns include those only who really want at present; a further supply is expected in a few days.

Varick transcript, DLC:GW.

Adj. Gen. Alexander Scammell’s orderly book entry for this date includes the following additional general orders: “Lord stirlings Division furnishes the Fatigue Party for the Orderly Room Tomorrow” (orderly book, 17 Oct. 1779–22 March 1780, DNA: RG 93, Orderly Books, 1775–1783, vol. 33). Major General Stirling’s division consisted of Brig. Gen. William Maxwell’s New Jersey brigade (the three New Jersey regiments and Col. Oliver Spencer’s additional regiment) and Brig. Gen. Edward Hand’s brigade (the 4th and 11th Pennsylvania regiments and the two Canadian regiments; see General Orders, 14 Dec. 1779). GW had granted Scammell leave of absence and had appointed Col. Otho Holland Williams acting adjutant general in his absence (see General Orders, 25 Dec. 1779). Presumably these entries were made under the supervision of Williams, rather than Scammell.

GW’s expenses for this date included £45 “To Cash pd Daneil Dyer for extra wages as an assistant Cook to the Genl family as ⅌ rect” (household account book, 11 April 1776–21 Nov. 1780, DLC:GW, ser. 5). The receipt of this date indicates that Daniel Dyer received $120 from Caleb Gibbs for 15 months of extra pay for assisting with the cooking for GW’s military family (Revolutionary War Accounts, Vouchers, and Receipted Accounts 1, 1776–1780, DLC:GW, ser. 5).

1Shoes were issued to the army on 6 Jan. (see the general orders of that date).
