§ From Thomas Gholson
14 January 1813. Transmits a letter from Mr. Johnson of the Virginia legislature, recommending James Semple to fill the “vacancy occasioned by the death of Judge Tyler.”1 “Mr. Semple2 who is at this time a Judge of the general court of Va. is a man of talents, and would, I have no doubt, discharge with ability, the duties of the office solicited for him.”

2. James Semple (1768–1834) was a professor of law at the College of William and Mary. In December 1795 he married Anne Contesse Tyler, the eldest daughter of Judge John Tyler (Tyler’s Quarterly 8 [1926–27]: 142).
