Dear Sir

myself & daughters being in reduced circomstances have been constrained to ask of several of our friends in Virginia if conveniant the friendly assistance of a few dollars I take the liberty to ask the same of you I can ashure you my dear Sir nothing short of rail want would or could induce me to make such an application to my relations and friends my Friend mr Woods will be the barer of this letter should you be inclin’d to assist us he will be a safe hand to send by I hope you will excuse me for asking this favour. want alone is the rail cause my daughters Joins me in Love &

Lewis’s daughters were TJ’s nieces Martha A. C. Lewis (Monroe), Lucy B. Lewis (Griffin), and Ann M. Lewis. Rev. William “Baptist Billy” woods (d. 1819), a longtime friend of the Lewis family, represented Albemarle County in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1799–1800, moved about 1810 to Livingston County, Kentucky, and later served as a justice of the peace there (Woods, Albemarle description begins Edgar Woods, Albemarle County in Virginia, 1901, repr. 1991 description ends , 354, 390; Boynton Merrill Jr., Jefferson’s Nephews: A Frontier Tragedy [1976], 297–8, 319, 420; Leonard, General Assembly description begins Cynthia Miller Leonard, comp., The General Assembly of Virginia, July 30, 1619–January 11, 1978: A Bicentennial Register of Members, 1978 description ends , 215).
