Charles Yancey

RC (DLC); dateline at foot of text; addressed [torn]: “[. . .] Monticello Mr Walker”; with unrelated calculations by TJ on verso; endorsed by TJ as received 5 Oct. 1813 and so recorded in SJL.

TJ was probably being introduced to Joel Walker (1764–1834), who was born near Natural Bridge, reputedly served as a private during the Revolutionary War, and became a surveyor thereafter. He lived in Rockbridge and Greenbrier counties before moving to Ohio in 1803 (Emma Siggins White, Genealogy of the Descendants of John Walker of Wigton, Scotland [1902], 228–9; DNA: RG 29, CS, Ohio, Fayette Co., Madison, 1830).
