Elbridge Gerry to Thomas Jefferson, 4 August 1813

From Elbridge Gerry

Washington 4th August 1813

Dear Sir,

My eldest Son will have the honor of presenting this. He is on a visit to his friends & relations at Pittsylvania, & it would have been impossible for him to have passed near to Monticello, without1 manifesting that reverence & respect which he has always entertained for the friend & father of his Country. In presenting him2 to yourself & family, I am favored with an opportunity of repeating assurances of my high esteem & respect for yourself, & of requesting you to renew the sincere wishes for the welfare of your family, of your affectionate friend

E. Gerry

RC (MHi); at foot of text: “President Jefferson”; endorsed by TJ as received 11 Aug. 1813 and so recorded in SJL.

Gerry’s eldest son was Elbridge Gerry (1793–1867). The younger Gerry graduated from Harvard University in 1813 and went on to study law with his brother-in-law James T. Austin. He was appointed surveyor and inspector of the revenue for the port of Boston by James Monroe in 1817 and reappointed to the same post by John Quincy Adams in 1826, but Andrew Jackson let his term expire in 1830. Gerry then served as a representative to the Massachusetts General Court, 1831–35 (Harvard University Quinquennial Catalogue of the Officers and Graduates, 1636–1925 [1925], 190; DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1809–17 and 1817–25; William T. Davis, Bench and Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts [1895], 1:255; JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States description ends , 3:96, 98, 262, 270, 462, 470 [12, 15 Dec. 1817, 7, 23 Jan. 1822, 26 Dec. 1825, 3 Jan. 1826]; JS description begins Journal of the Senate of the United States description ends , 19:390; New York Evening Post, 21 May 1867).

The younger Gerry’s friends & relations in Pittsylvania County were the family of his recently deceased uncle, Isaac Coles, including the latter’s widow, Catharine Thompson Coles (DVB description begins John T. Kneebone and others, eds., Dictionary of Virginia Biography, 1998– , 3 vols. description ends ).
