Gerry’s eldest son was Elbridge Gerry (1793–1867). The younger Gerry graduated from Harvard University in 1813 and went on to study law with his brother-in-law James T. Austin. He was appointed surveyor and inspector of the revenue for the port of Boston by James Monroe in 1817 and reappointed to the same post by John Quincy Adams in 1826, but Andrew Jackson let his term expire in 1830.
