Before his departure from Philadelphia on 27 June TJ made an order on John Barnes for $319 to pay Francis “in full.” Since his last settlement of accounts with the hotelkeeper on 3 July 1797, TJ had written drafts on Barnes to pay Francis $120 on 14 Jan., $200 on 17 Feb., $100 on 6 Apr., and $200 on 9 May (all in MHi, written and signed by TJ, endorsed by Barnes and canceled;
, 2:965, 977, 979, 981, 983, 986). In another draft on Barnes written on 9 Jan. 1799 TJ ordered payment of $150 to Francis (MS in ViU: Edgehill Randolph Papers, written and signed by TJ, endorsed by Barnes and signed by Francis on verso).1. Here and below, text and figures in italics are in TJ’s hand.
