MS (MHi); date supplied from TJ’s financial memoranda (see below); in an unknown hand, with additions by TJ shown in italics (see note 1); endorsed by TJ: “Francis John.”

Before his departure from Philadelphia on 27 June TJ made an order on John Barnes for $319 to pay Francis “in full.” Since his last settlement of accounts with the hotelkeeper on 3 July 1797, TJ had written drafts on Barnes to pay Francis $120 on 14 Jan., $200 on 17 Feb., $100 on 6 Apr., and $200 on 9 May (all in MHi, written and signed by TJ, endorsed by Barnes and canceled; MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:965, 977, 979, 981, 983, 986). In another draft on Barnes written on 9 Jan. 1799 TJ ordered payment of $150 to Francis (MS in ViU: Edgehill Randolph Papers, written and signed by TJ, endorsed by Barnes and signed by Francis on verso).
