1. Smith, a Presbyterian clergyman, had a pastorate in western Virginia in the seventeen-seventies, taught at the College of New Jersey from 1779 to 1795, and served as president of the college from 1795 to 1812.
2. By 1803 John W. Smith was listed in a New York City directory as “counsellor” with his office at 16 Nassau Street (Longworth’s American Almanac, New-York Register and City-Directory, for the Twenty-Eighth Year of American Independence [New York: Printed and Published by D. Long-worth, 1803], 265).
