From Alexander Hamilton to George Washington, [August 1794]

To George Washington

[Philadelphia, August, 1794]1

The Secretary of the Treasury presents his respects to the President. He sent yesterday for the papers necessary to furnish the particular instances of misconduct in certain officers of Pennsylvania,2 but on examination they prove not to be the right ones. There is probably not time to correct the error today; but the President may mention the circumstance to the Governor3 & inform him that he will direct me to communicate particulars.

LC, George Washington Papers, Library of Congress.

1In the George Washington letter book this letter is dated March 13, 1794. The contents, however, indicate that it was written in late August, 1794.

2For “instances of misconduct in certain officers of Pennsylvania,” see H to Washington, August 5, 1794.

3On August 22, 1794, Thomas Mifflin wrote to Washington requesting details on the charges which H had made in his letter to Washington of August 5, 1794 (LS, RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters, 1790–1799, National Archives).
