To Benjamin Franklin from Margaret Cavendish, 2 September 1778: résumé
From Margaret Cavendish7
ALS: American Philosophical Society
<Calais, September 2: Having had no answer to my two previous letters, I suspect you did not receive them. I implore the protection you promised me, so that I may be allowed by the Court to import my brother’s work8 to this country. Please answer me before I depart for England in a fortnight.>
[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]
7. Better known to BF as Margaret Stewart. See XXIII, 302 n where we discuss her many appeals to BF. We omitted this one because we had been thrown off track by her signing herself Cavendish.
8. The Senator’s Remembrancer, by John Stewart. For a description of this remarkable work, see XVIII, 36 n.
