Conveyance of Slaves to Thomas Jefferson Randolph

Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Jefferson of Monticello in the county of Albemarle in consideration of my affection to my grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph of the same place & county have given to my said grandson four negro slaves to wit Thruston the son of Isabel, Bec daughter of Minerva, Lewis & Sally son & daughter of Jenny to hold the same in absolute property: in witness whereof I have delivered the said slaves into his actual possession, and have hereto set my hand & seal this 26th day of March 1813.

King, Richmond, 1979; photocopy in ViHi); in TJ’s hand, except for signatures of witnesses in their hands and dates of their signatures in Alexander Garrett’s hand; with seal affixed adjacent to TJ’s signature; attested on verso: “At A court held for Albemarle county the 2d August 1814 This Bill sale was produced into court and proved by the oaths of Peter Carr and Edmund Bacon two of the witnesses thereto and In the Office of the county court of Albemarle the 22d October 1814 was fully proved by the oath of Hugh Chisholmn before me according to law and thereupon admitted to record teste Alex. Garrett D C”; docketed: “Jefferson to Randolph } Bill Sale 2d August 1813 proved by 2 Witnesses 22 Oct. 1814 fully proved” and “Recorded page 154 Examined.” Tr (Albemarle Co. Deed Book, 19:154); in Garrett’s hand.

A missing letter from TJ to Thomas Jefferson Randolph is recorded in SJL as written from Poplar Forest on 6 May 1813.
