Dr. Ewell presents his best respects to Mr. Madison—& takes the liberty of forwarding this paper—in the hope that he will read the appendage; In two or three days Dr. Ewell will present Mr. Madison with a copy of the work1 & in the mean time begs that he may be considered as a candidate for one of the Medical departments in the University of Virginia. Dr. Ewell has written to Mr. Jefferson & will speedily furnish pro[o]f of his ability to teach if required.

RC (DLC). The RC is written on the verso of an undated prospectus (1 p.) for Ewell’s The Virginia Family Physician.

1Possibly enclosed with the RC was another prospectus (DLC: Madison Collection, Rare Book and Special Collections Division; 1 p.), soliciting subscriptions for the same work, and addressed on the verso by Ewell to JM; postmarked at Haymarket, Virginia, 16 Dec. 1824; docketed by JM “Decr. 12. 1824.”
