Dumfries [Va.] 29 April 1777. “I have nothing new to inform you of relative to this regiment, since my last,1 except the resignation of some of the officers, from their inability to raise men. The inclos’d is from Mr Montgomerie of this town, which I take the liberty to transmit to you.2”

In the enclosed letter to Grayson of this date, Thomas Montgomerie, a Dumfries merchant with whom GW was well acquainted, asks Grayson to apply to GW “to know if he will permit me to go over to New York; from whence I may get out to some part of the world, where perhaps from proper assistance and a change of climate, I may recover from a very bad state of health” (DLC:GW). In February 1778 Montgomerie again sought a passport from GW to go abroad for the sake of his health, and GW consented to that request in his letter to Montgomery of 28 Feb. 1778 (DLC:GW).
