Dear sir

I wish for your Excellency’s instruction as to the inclos’d Ac[coun]t, which I should be glad you could return me by Express.1 The claim has merit, the officer from Every account I have had (and that Reputable) did in an Extraordinary manner Exert him self, & serve the cause, and was at an Extraordinary Expence & in my opinion ought to have his Acct Allow’d I am Dear sir most Respec[t]fully your Excellency’s Obt hum. servt

1The enclosed account of Ensign Sturgin (Sturgis) Sloan has not been identified. Sloan (d. 1837), of Great Barrington, Mass., served as a private in the Lexington Alarm of April 1775. From May to December 1775, he served as a private in Col. John Fellows’s Massachusetts Regiment. He joined the 23d Continental Regiment as a sergeant in February 1776. He became an ensign in the 2d Massachusetts Regiment in January 1777 and received promotion to lieutenant in August 1781. In 1782, Sloan served for eight months in the 10th Massachsetts Regiment before rejoining the 2d Massachusetts Regiment. He transferred to the 3d Massachusetts Regiment in June 1783 and left the army the following November.
