Dr Sir

Cap. Marshall & myself being the persons chosen by our Independent company, to wait on you for the purpose of offering you the command;1 and my not knowing what day he woud call on me, happened to be from home, which prevented my doing myself that pleasure I expected, being quite unprepared for such a journey, the request of the company & likewise of the Committee Cap. Marshall will inform you my complets to Mrs Washington self & family concludes me Dr Sir Your Most Obdt

1. James Scott, Jr. (1743–1779), lived at Clermont near the courthouse in Fauquier County. He was the son of James Scott (d. 1782) of Dettingen Parish in Prince William County. The younger Scott had been a member of the House of Burgesses since 1768 and also of the first and second conventions. He and fellow burgess Thomas Marshall (1730–1802) were captains of the Fauquier Independent Company. Thomas Marshall arrived at Mount Vernon on 21 Feb.
