Memorandum from Thomas Jefferson
[Philadelphia, 15 November 1792]
Department of State, to wit:
The requisites of the Law having been complied with on the part of the Ship Canton fitted out from the port of Philadelphia, on a voyage to India, Hugh Alexander Makee Master thereof became entitled to a passport in the usual form, which was this day granted.
(N.B. The above passport is one of the six which were signed by the President previous to his departure for the southward.)1

The DS is docketed: “Certificate for a Sea Letter granted to the Ship Canton Novr 15th 1792.”
1. GW had left Philadelphia on 21 Mar. 1791, stopping at Mount Vernon before his 7 April departure for a two-month journey through Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. For details regarding GW’s Southern Tour, see , 6:99–163. On 24 Nov. 1792 Jefferson sent GW the “2d” passport, issued for “the Brigantine, Columbia, fitted out from the Port of Philadelphia, on a voyage to the Isle of France, John Green, Master.” On 28 Dec. 1792 Jefferson certified the “3rd” passport, for “the Ship Washington, fitted out from the port of New York, Thomas Randall Master,” and on 15 Mar. 1793 he certified the “4th” passport, for “the Ship Sampson, fitted out from the port of Philadelphia, John Rossiter Master” (all are in DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters). The fifth and sixth passports have not been identified.
