1. The letter from Spanish consuls José de Jaudenes and José Ignacio de Viar to Jefferson of 12 June 1793 relayed Spanish concerns about efforts by U.S. officials in the Southwest Territory to cultivate the friendship of the southern Indians to the detriment of the Spanish in New Orleans. 2. Jefferson’s letter to Thomas Pinckney of 14 June enclosed “two forms of passports for our vessels,” which “will enable you to decide on the genuineness of such as may be produced to you.” Jefferson also sent “several memorials and letters which have passed between the executive and the ministers of France and England” in order to demonstrate “the principles on which we are proceeding between the belligerent powers.” After a discussion of these documents and the problems of maintaining U.S. neutrality, Jefferson reported on current efforts to achieve peace with the Indians in the Northwest Territory (ibid., 286–88; see also JPP description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed.
