From George Washington to the United States Senate, 9 December 1793

To the United States Senate

United States, Decemb: 9th 1793.

Gentlemen of the Senate,

I nominate Walter Stewart, to be Surveyor for the District of Philadelphia, and Inspector of the Revenue for the port of Philadelphia; vice William McPherson, appointed Naval Officer. and, Daniel Lionel Huger, of South Carolina, to be Marshall for the District of South Carolina; vice Isaac Huger, resigned.1

1The Senate approved these nominations on 10 Dec. (Senate Executive Journal description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America: From the commencement of the First, to the termination of the Nineteenth Congress. Vol. 1. Washington, D.C., 1828. description ends , 141). GW’s secretary Bartholomew Dandridge, Jr., wrote Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson on that date to convey GW’s request that Jefferson have the commissions prepared (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters). Daniel Lionel Huger (1768–1798), Isaac Huger’s second son, served as marshal for about one year, resigning in late November or early December 1794.
