The following appointments have been made in the Army of the United States, during the recess of the Senate; and I now nominate the following persons to fill the Offices annexed to their names respectively.1

3. This nominee was probably Howell Lewis (b. 1759) of Goochland County, Va. (see 445–47, 483–84).
4. William Preston requested such an appointment in his letter to GW of 10 May 1792.
5. The Senate approved these nominations on 21 Nov. 1792 (see 1:126), and on that date Tobias Lear sent Knox notification of the Senate’s confirmations (DLC:GW).
