Your letter of the 26 of December is received.2 The sum you mention per Month appears high for the object. From a calculation made here it is concluded, that Two thousand five hundred Dollars would be a large allowance upon an œconomical arrangement. If the French Minister should express to the Government a desire that this sum per Month should be furnished for such a purpose, I take it for granted it would be complied with.

1. Stevens and James Nicholson of New York City had entered into a contract with Edmond Charles Genet, the French Minister to the United States, on October 6, 1793. The contract required Nicholson and Stevens to furnish all the necessary provisions for the French navy “as well as to fulfill any other orders which may be given by the consul” of New York, Alexandre Maurice Blanc de Lanautte, Comte d’Hauterive (DS, New-York Historical Society, New York City).
