Th: Jefferson requests the favour of Mr Wm. Smith to dine with him on Friday the 9th. inst. at half after three.
The favour of an answer is asked.

Friday the 9th: following his recall as U.S. minister to Portugal, William Loughton Smith arrived in Washington on 3 Dec. 1803. By 15 Jan. 1804, he was home in Charleston. The one Friday on the 9th of a month that fell during his visit to the capital was 9 Dec. 1803 (National Intelligencer, 5 Dec. 1803; Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser, 6 Feb. 1804).
