To the Senate

January 25th 1816

Commissions having been issued during the recess of Congress to the following persons as Collectors of direct taxes and internal duties, I now nominate them to the Collectorships respectively annexed to their names.

James Madison

Of the appended list of fifteen names in a clerk’s hand, signed by JM, the Senate confirmed three on 29 Jan. 1816 and five others on 5 Feb. 1816 (Senate Exec. Proceedings, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends 3:26, 28).
