From George Washington to Robert Cary & Company, 12 January 1769

To Robert Cary & Company

Mount Vernon Jany 12th 1769

In looking over my order (of the 20th of June last) for Goods, I perceive that I have omitted sending for Dutch Blanketting for the use of my Estate on Potomack—an Article I much want, and must beg the favour of you to send me by the first Ship bound to this River. Three pieces are requisite; and if they cannot be got here (in a vessel to Potomack) by the middle or last of October, I must, in that case, desire they may be sent to York or James River to the care of Mr Joseph Valentine; as some of my People will suffer greatly for want of them, if they do not come to my hands before Winter setts in.1 From him I can fall upon some method to fetch them; although it woud be vastly more desireable to receive them by a Vessel directly to this River if any such shoud offer. ALS, anonymous donor; ALB, DLC:GW. The ALS, which probably is the one sold by Sotheby’s in London on 11–12 June 1973, is docketed on the cover, “Recd 3d March,” and on the bottom of the letter, “Goods Entd 269 answered & Sent ⅌ Peterson.” GW notes on the letter-book copy: “Sent by the Diana, Captn Campbell to Glasgow.”

1An invoice of Robert Cary & Co. for “3 ps best Striped Blankets” costing £13.2.6, “Bought of Waltr Humphreys” and “Ship’d on board the Betty Jacob Peterson Comr for Virginia on Acct & Risque of Colo. George Washington,” is dated “London 28th Feby 1769” (DLC:GW). Cary’s endorsement of GW’s letter indicates that Cary did not receive GW’s order until 3 Mar. 1769, but the dating of the endorsement may have been mistaken. Cary’s letter to GW of 1 Mar. 1769, which is missing, probably would clarify this.
